A possible relationship between gluconeogenesis and glycogen metabolism in rabbits during myocardial ischemia Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGUIAR,RAQUEL R. DE; VALE,DANIELA F.; SILVA,RENATO M. DA; MUNIZ,YOLANDA P.; ANTUNES,FERNANDA; LOGULLO,CARLOS; OLIVEIRA,ANDRÉ L.A.; ALMEIDA,ADRIANA J. DE.
ABSTRACT Ischemia is responsible for many metabolic abnormalities in the heart, causing changes in organ function. One of modifications occurring in the ischemic cell is changing from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. This change causes the predominance of the use of carbohydrates as an energy substrate instead of lipids. In this case, the glycogen is essential to the maintenance of heart energy intake, being an important reserve to resist the stress caused by hypoxia, using glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation. In order to study the glucose anaerobic pathways utilization and understand the metabolic adaptations, New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to ischemia caused by Inflow occlusion technique. The animals were monitored during surgery by pH and...

Angiotensin and baroreflex control of the circulation BJMBR
Head,G.A.; Saigusa,T.; Mayorov,D.N..
There is a close association between the location of angiotensin (Ang) receptors and many important brain nuclei involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular system. The present review encompasses the physiological role of Ang II in the brainstem, particularly in relation to its influence on baroreflex control of the heart and kidney. Activation of AT1 receptors in the brainstem by fourth ventricle (4V) administration to conscious rabbits or local administration of Ang II into the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) of anesthetized rabbits acutely increases renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and RSNA baroreflex responses. Administration of the Ang antagonist Sarile into the RVLM of anesthetized rabbits blocked the effects of Ang II on the RSNA...

Morphine is often used in cancer pain and postoperative analgesic management but induces respiratory depression. Therefore, there is an ongoing search for drug candidates that can antagonize morphine-induced respiratory depression but have no effect on morphine-induced analgesia. Acetylcholine is an excitatory neurotransmitter in central respiratory control and physostigmine antagonizes morphine-induced respiratory depression. However, physostigmine has not been applied in clinical practice because it has a short action time, among other characteristics. We therefore asked whether donepezil (a long-acting acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease) can antagonize morphine-induced respiratory depression. Using the...

Comparative Quantitative and Qualitative Attributes of the Surface Respiratory Macrophages in the Domestic Duck and the Rabbit International Journal of Morphology
Mutua,P. M; Gicheru,M. M; Makanya,A. N; Kiama,S. G.
In mammals, surface respiratory macrophages (SM) are known to play a foremost role in protecting the respiratory system by providing first line of defense through engulfing pathogens and particulate matter respired with air. It has been reported that the pulmonary cellular defense system of domestic birds is inadequate. In particular, low number of SM and even lack of the cells in a healthy avian respiratory system have been associated with susceptibility of domestic birds to respiratory diseases. In an endeavor to resolve the existing controversy, the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the surface respiratory macrophages of the domestic duck and of the domestic rabbit were compared under similar experimental conditions. Quantitatively, the rabbit...

Donepezil reverses buprenorphine-induced central respiratory depression in anesthetized rabbits Biol. Res.
SAKURABA,SHIGEKI; TSUJITA,MIKI; ARISAKA,HIROFUMI; TAKEDA,JUNZO; YOSHIDA,KAZUICHI; KUWANA,SHUN-ICHI.
Buprenorphine is a mixed opioid receptor agonist-antagonist used in acute and chronic pain management. Although this agent's analgesic effect increases in a dose-dependent manner, buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression shows a marked ceiling effect at higher doses, which is considered to be an indicator of safety. Nevertheless, cases of overdose mortality or severe respiratory depression associated with buprenorphine use have been reported. Naloxone can reverse buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression, but is slow-acting and unstable, meaning that new drug candidates able to specifically antagonize buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression are needed in order to enable maximal analgesic effect without respiratory depression. Acetylcholine is...

Effect of freezing on rabbit cultured chondrocytes Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Filgueiras,R.R; Del Carlo,R.J; Alves,N.P; Viloria,M.I.V; McManus,C.M; Castro,M.B; Filgueiras,F.P.F; Monteiro,B.S; Paula,A.C; Farias,A.
This work evaluated the effect of freezing on chondrocytes maintained in culture, aiming the establishment of a cell bank for future application as heterologous implant. Chondrocytes extracted from joint cartilage of nine healthy New Zealand White rabbits were cultivated and frozen with the cryoprotector 5% dimethylsulfoxide for six months. Phenotypic and scanning electron microscopy analyses were carried out to identify morphological and functional differences between fresh and thawed cells. After enzymatic digestion, a total of 4.8x10(5)cells per rabbit were obtained. Fresh chondrocytes showed a high mitotic rate and abundant matrix was present up to 60 days of culture. Loss of phenotypic stability was notable in the thawed chondrocytes, with a low...

Effect of postnatal malnutrition on hyperoxia-induced newborn lung development BJMBR
Mataloun,M.M.G.B.; Leone,C.R.; Mascaretti,R.S.; Dohlnikoff,M.; Rebello,C.M..
Several factors are associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Among them, hyperoxia and lung immaturity are considered to be fundamental; however, the effect of malnutrition is unknown. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of 7 days of postnatal malnutrition and hyperoxia on lung weight, volume, water content, and pulmonary morphometry of premature rabbits. After c-section, 28-day-old New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into four groups: control diet and room air (CA, N = 17), control diet and ≥95% O2 (CH, N = 17), malnutrition and room air (MA, N = 18), and malnutrition and ≥95% O2 (MH, N = 18). Malnutrition was defined as a 30% reduction of all the nutrients provided in the control diet. Treatments were maintained for 7 days, after which...

Effects of ethyl-cyanoacrylate and octyl-cyanoacrylate on experimental corneal lesions in rabbits Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Barbosa,V.T.; Thiesen,R; Soares,E.G.; Machado,M.R.F.; Laus,J.L..
The use of ethyl-cyanoacrylate and octyl-cyanoacrylate were clinically and histopathologically compared on the corneas of 36 rabbits after lamellar keratectomy (standardized diameter and depth). The animals were distributed into two groups, one for each type of adhesive. From each group, six subgroups were histopathologically evaluated on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, 30th, and 60th day post-operative. General (daily) and ophthalmic (days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30, 44, and 60) evaluations clinically indicated that there were significant differences for the variables water intake, attitude, blepharitis, corneal edema, and fluorescein test. The adhesive permanence time for octyl-cyanoacrylate (17.22 days) was greater than that for ethyl-cyanoacrylate (7.66...

Effects of inspired oxygen fractions in rabbits anesthetized with isoflurane or sevoflurane, maintained on spontaneous ventilation Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Horr,M.; Nunes,N.; Biteli,E.G.F.; Lopes,P.C.F.; Gering,A.P.; Moro,J.V.; Rocha,F.D.L..
ABSTRACT It is important to identify the best inspired fraction of oxygen in a variety of situations, including sevoflurane or isoflurane anesthesia, in spontaneously breathing rabbits. For this, 64 rabbits were assigned to eight groups: GI100 (FiO2= 1,0 + isoflurane), GS100 (FiO2= 1,0 + sevoflurane), GI80 (FiO2= 0,8 + isoflurane), GS80 (FiO2= 0,8 + sevoflurane), GI60 (FiO2= 0,6 + isoflurane), GS60 (FiO2= 0,6 + sevoflurane), GI21 (FiO2= 0,21 + isoflurane), GS21 (FiO2= 0,21 + sevoflurane). The induction was performed with (2.5MAC) of the anesthetic. The vaporizer was setted at 1.5 MAC and FiO2 as attributed for each group. After the induction, the concentration was changed to 1 MAC. Measurements of parameters were performed 30 minutes after induction (T0),...

Effects of insulin and actin on phosphofructokinase activity and cellular distribution in skeletal muscle Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Ana Paula P.; Alves,Gutemberg G.; Araújo,Alexandre H.B.; Sola-Penna,Mauro.
In this work, we report evidences that the association of phosphofructokinase and F-actin can be affected by insulin stimulation in rabbit skeletal muscle homogenates and that this association can be a mechanism of phos-phofructokinase regulation. Through co-sedimentation techniques, we observed that on insulin-stimulated tissues, approximately 70% of phosphofructokinase activity is co-located in an actin-enriched fraction, against 28% in control. This phenomenon is accompanied by a 100% increase in specific phosphofructokinase activity in stimulated homogenates. Purified F-actin causes an increase of 230% in phosphofructokinase activity and alters its kinetic parameters. The presence of F-actin increases the affinity of phosphofructokinase for fructose...

Electroretinography and immunohistochemistry of retina in rabbits treated with sildenafil citrate Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Amaral,A.V.C.; Silva,G.A.; Costa,A.P.A.; Oliveira,K.S.; Jordão,P.; Ribeiro,A.P.; Renzo,R.; Laus,J.L..
Sildenafil citrate is a type-5 phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PDE-5), able to inhibit type-6 phosphodiesterase (PDE-6) as well, providing clinical benefits and paraeffects, some of them potentially related to the retina. The effects of the sildenafil on the retrobulbar and retinal circulation were studied in 27 adult male rabbits of the White New Zealand breed. The electric activity of the retina was evaluated before and at the end of the treatments, and immunohistochemistry studies were conducted. An amplitude increase of the b wave was found in the mixed response of cones and rods after 7 days of treatment with sildenafil citrate. However, in the other evaluations and periods, the values did not differ from the basal ones. Through immunohistochemistry, no...

Evaluation of extraction methods for progesterone determination in rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) feces by radioimmunoassay Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
KORNDÖRFER,Clotilde Maria; MEIRELLES,Cyro Ferreira; BUENO,Ives Cláudio da Silva; ABDALLA,Adibe Luiz.
The purpose of this study was to find a practical procedure for the extraction of progesterone (P4) from feces and to determine if the P4 plasma profiles during pregnancy were reflected in the total fecal P4 of pregnant rabbits. The rabbit was used as model for the techniques. Plasma and feces were collected from 11 rabbits during a period of 42 days. Three different methods of P4 extraction were used. The total P4 was measured by solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) with 125I-P4 as the tracer. Results suggested that it was possible to extract total P4 from rabbit feces with methanol and petroleum ether. Plasma and fecal P4 profiles were compared for both pregnant and ovariectomized rabbits. It was possible to differentiate total P4 extracted from day two...

Hyaluronic acid and synovial fluid in preventing adhesion formation after tenorrhaphy: An in vivo study on rabbit Achilles tendon Ciência Rural
Kurt,Başak; Ozaydin,Isa; Sozmen,Mahmut; Bilge,Ali; Cihan,Mete; Hamamci,Emre; Aydin,Ugur.
ABSTRACT: Peritendinous adhesions are a significant problem in tendon surgery. One of the most preferred methods for preventing adhesion formation is anti-adhesive applications. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of natural synovial fluid as an alternative viscoelastic agent for preventing adhesion in the healing period compared to hyaluronic acid. Thirty adult New Zealand rabbits were used in the study to form three experimental models. In all groups, a rupture was induced in the Achilles tendons. Following tenorrhaphy, hyaluronic acid was applied in one group and synovial fluid in the other group for anti-adhesive purposes. In the control group, no viscoelastic application was made. Bandage was applied to the operated extremities for three...
